Universal’s new UK theme park to receive £1.3 billion from government

Universal Studios is set to receive £1.3 billion in support from the government for its new UK theme park.

In April 2025, the studio announced plans for its first theme park in Europe, adding to its tally of locations in Orlando, Florida and Beijing, as well as resorts in Japan and Singapore.

Situated in Kempston Hardwick, it will take up 700 acres of land, including a 500-bed hotel and a retail, dining, and entertainment complex. It is slated to open in 2031.

Now, Comcast NBCUniversal, the parent company of Universal Studios, has outlined further plans for the theme park, which they are investing £5 billion into, as well as a promise of a further £1 billion over its first ten years.

They hope it will attract 8.5 million visitors per year, which would make it the most visited theme park across Europe.

The government’s £1.3 billion will go towards upgrading transport links and local infrastructure in the area to ensure it is accessible.

Universal have also confirmed that the ambitious theme park will be called Universal United Kingdom Resort.

Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Lisa Nandy said in a statement: “This unparalleled investment is a huge vote of confidence in the UK and puts rocket boosters under our entertainment industry.”

Nandy continued, “When it comes to creating world class experiences, the UK is second to none. We’re proud to be backing British industry, investing in local talent and partnering with powerhouses like Universal to create jobs, growth and opportunities across the UK.”

Meanwhile, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, shared her vision for how Universal United Kingdom Resort will boost growth in the Bedfordshire area, stating, “This landmark investment in the heart of the Oxford to Cambridge Growth Corridor will unlock nearly £50 billion of economic growth and create tens of thousands of jobs across Bedfordshire in construction, hospitality, creative and technology sectors.”

She added, “Our own investment in transport and infrastructure means that local people will benefit — improving connectivity, backing our creative industries, and bringing millions of visitors to the UK from across the world.”

Additionally, Mark Woodbury, Chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations and Experiences, described the latest step as a “significant milestone”, promising that it “will create so many new opportunities for the people of Bedford and beyond and allow us to share our distinct experiences with guests from around the world.”
