With just a few weeks to go until the first anniversary of the death of pioneering Chicago House producer Frankie Knuckles, one of the UK’s most celebrated dance duos are to release a fitting tribute.
Rick Smith and Karl Hyde aka Underworld have joined forces with label mates Heller & Farley to cover the classic Knuckles track ‘Baby Wants to Ride’.
The version manages to achieve the difficult task of retaining the song’s unmistakeable Chicago groove, while perfectly weaving in the iconic vocals of Hyde and a production style that sounds bang up to date.
The result is a single that showcases the collaborative talents and versatility of two of the Junior Boys Own label’s finest artists, but also one that will be a touching reminder of just how important Knuckles was to the electronic community on both sides of the Atlantic when it gets its release on March 31st – exactly one year after his passing.
When asked about the collaboration, Underworld’s Rick Smith said: “As the creator of house music we owe Frankie a huge debt. Karl and I have always seen Frankie as the source and, as Underworld, we’re always swimming in his river.”
Proceeds from the single will go to the Frankie Knuckles Fund, which is part of the Elton John Aids Foundation.
