UK vinyl sales reach new 33-year high

In the music industry, things seem to be looking up as it’s been confirmed that vinyl sales in the UK reached a 33-year high in 2023 as the physical format enjoyed an a continued revival.

The sales of vinyl records in the UK have hit their highest level since 1990. After decades of increased digitisation that saw the format almost extinct, records are well and truly having a comeback.

Record sales in 2023 mark the 16th consecutive year of growth for the format, according to the British Photographic Institute. In fact, the vinyl market increased more than four times as fast, with an 11.7 per cent sales rise this year.

5.9million units were sold in 2023. Furthermore, last week alone, 250,000 vinyl records were sold in the UK in the run-up to Christmas.

The year’s top seller was Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version). The Rolling Stones’ new album Hackney Diamonds came in second place. Other leaders included Blur, Boygenius and Lana Del Rey.

As well as a maintained interest in purchasing old, classic records, 2023 saw a move towards fans wanting new albums. Over half of the top 100 selling records were released in the last two years with artists such as The 1975, Gorillaz, Depeche Mode and Sleaford Mods also making the chart.

Physical formats are seeing a new boom in popularity. Not only are records making a comeback, but there has also been a revived interest in cassettes. Olivia Rodrigo topped cassette sales with her new album Guts.

In 2023, the market for physical formats have only declined by 1 per cent, which is the closest it’s come to stabilising since 2004. In response to the revived interest, HMV announced the reopening of their Oxford Street flagship store as an incredibly positive sign for music sales and the industry as a whole.
