Tributes pour in as D’Angelo dies at 51

Grammy Award-winning icon D’Angelo has died at the age of 51, it has been confirmed by his family.

“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life … After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025,” his family said in a statement.

“We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind,” the statement continued. “We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world”.

The ‘Voodoo’ mastermind passed away on the morning of October 14th in New York, according to his family and former manager, Kedar Massenberg.

Tributes have begun to pour in for the icon, including from Tyler, the Creator, who posted a black and white photo of the R&B star on X.

Similarly, the record store Rough Trade also paid tribute on X, calling D’Angelo “The DNA of R&B” before adding that he was “A timeless voice which set the tone for modern soul. A world-class talent gone too soon. RIP D’Angelo.”

Rapper Flavor Flav posted on the social media platform: “R.I.P. ICON D’Angelo”.

The DJ and record producer Alchemist, under his name on X as Alchemist Type Beat, also said: “Man. Rest in peace D’Angelo.”

DJ Premier, who helped to produce one of D’Angelo’s most famous songs in ‘Devil’s Pie’, also wrote: “Such a sad loss to the passing of D’Angelo. We have so many great times. Gonna miss you so much. Sleep Peacefully D’ Love You KING.”

The rapper Evidence led a simple tribute by simply posting D’Angelo’s name alongside a broken heart and praying emoji on X.
