Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have released the first volume of their score for Watchmen, a television series created and developed by Damon Lindelof for HBO
The show, a superhero series, inspired by some characters from the DC Comics series of the same name created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, will be premiered on Sunday as it kickstarts its nine-episode run.
“Watchmen takes place in an alternative, contemporary reality in the United States, in which masked vigilantes became outlawed due to their violent methods,” the official synopsis reads. “Despite this, some gather around in order to start a revolution while others are out to stop it before it is too late, as a greater question rises above them all; who watches the Watchmen?”
Now, as the show proves a huge hit, Reznor and Ross have detailed the first of three volumes of their soundtrack with Vol. 2 to arrive on November 25th and Vol. 3 is to be released on December 16th.
“Well, we’re having some fun with the way that it’s released,” Reznor explained to Rolling Stone. There are a number of reasons behind doing that. One is there is quite a bit of music, and I think when you drop a big chunk — a couple hours’ worth of music — on the public these days, that’s a good way to get 90 percent of it ignored. So breaking it up is good.
“The motivation wasn’t to monetise it three times; that wasn’t what the deciding factor was. And we’re putting it out on vinyl because we’ve been on a physical-object kick. Speaking for myself, that’s for nostalgic reasons. I’m looking at a shelf full of vinyl albums right now, and it that feels a little different than something that’s a cloud-based file, which feels a little disposable. They also tie into Watchmen. Let’s put it this way: We overthought it.”
The score will also be given a unique vinyl release. Pressed on 180gram vinyl, the score will be shared via three unique records which will be released later this year. Volume 1 set for release on the 4th of November will be quickly followed by Volume 2 on the 25th of November and, finally, Volume 3 on the 16th of December.
“Three unique LPS specifically time to be released throughout the first season of HBO’s Watchmen,” a description reads on the NIN official website. “Created in collaboration with the show’s writers, each LP features the score from Academy Award winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross as well as artwork and packaging exclusive to this vinyl release that explores the culture of watchmen American and provides revealing insights into the saga’s mythology and mysteries.”
“We reached out to Damon and the HBO camp when I first heard about it, because I’ve been a fan of Damon since Lost. I was completely blown away by The Leftovers,” Reznor previously explained in an interview with Variety. “Also, as a big fan of Watchmen [in other incarnations], I appreciated the fearlessness that taking on that property and that IP would require. I thought, if anybody was to do it at any place, HBO and Damon sounds exciting to me.”
He added: “For Watchmen we’ve had the challenge of working almost blind, off a bit of a script for the first episode of 10. But we spent enough time with Damon to know that we’re kindred spirits.”
