The disappearance of Tami Lynn Leppert: A tragedy behind Al Pacino’s ‘Scarface’
Brian De Palma’s crime classic Scarface has become such an indelible part of cinema history that even people who’ve never seen the movie are fully aware of Tony Montana and his various quotes to have infiltrated the pop culture lexicon and stayed there ever since it was first released in 1983, but what’s lesser-known is the unsolved disappearance of a cast member.
Tami Lynn Leppert was a beauty queen, model, and actor with a pair of uncredited roles in comedies Little Darlings and Spring Break prior to joining the Scarface ensemble. While her character wasn’t named in the credits, she nonetheless played a part in pivotal scenes as the ‘Distraction a the Lookout Car’ in the build-up to the famous chainsaw sequence, where she shared the screen with Steven Bauer’s Manny.
Less than two months after being on set for what would go on to become a huge hit, though, Leppert vanished without a trace. There were concerns over her mental well-being that saw her spend 72 hours in a medical facility after her mother grew concerned over Leppert’s fears that she would be murdered, but she was released with no signs of alcohol or drug abuse present.
Last seen on July 6th, 1983, a friend informed the authorities that he’d argued with her during a drive and that she’d been dropped off in a car park. As it turned out, he was the last person ever to see her, although he wasn’t considered to be a suspect.
A local police officer would subsequently receive phone calls from a woman who claimed Leppert was alive and well. The first claimed that contact would be made eventually, while the second offered that she’d simply decided to follow her non-celebrity dream of studying to become a nurse.
During the investigation into her disappearance, serial killer Christopher Wilder was named as a potential suspect, although he was never officially linked to the Leppert case. Another convicted criminal, John Crutchley, was also named as a potential person of interest, although he, too, was never actively linked directly to Leppert’s vanishing.
Despite being the subject of countless true crime podcasts and even an episode of Unsolved Mysteries dedicated entirely to the unexplained circumstances that saw her fall off the face of the earth, Leppert remains a missing person who hasn’t been seen or heard from so much as once in more than 40 years.
Her sister disputed some of the facts put forward in the aforementioned television episode, with an online appeal offering that while “her missing persons case was featured on Unsolved Mysteries, some of the things on the story are not correct.”
For more than 40 years, Leppert’s family have been left with no clue as to the how and why of her disappearance, and it remains a chilling aspect of Scarface’s legacy that often goes unmentioned, overlooked, and in many cases completely unknown.
