Tom Selleck wants cult TV series ‘Blue Bloods’ to be brought back

After CBS announced the cancellation of the police drama Blue Bloods, starring actor Tom Selleck has voiced his disappointment that the show is coming to an end. Despite running for 14 series and nearly 300 episodes, Selleck has argued that the New York-based drama still has much to offer.

Blue Bloods premiered on CBS back in September 2010. Since then, the programme has become a flagship production of the network, quickly establishing itself as one of their most popular shows. Of course, a big part of the show’s appeal is the inclusion of television legend Tom Selleck, who plays Police Commissioner Frank Reagan.

Selleck has been an icon of American television for decades, owing to his countless appearances as Magnum P.I. throughout the 1980s. His role in Blue Bloods helped to continue that legacy before CBS announced that the show’s 14th series would be its final, coming to an end in the autumn of this year.

During a recent interview with CBS News, Selleck affirmed his hope that the network would “come to their senses” and reconsider the show’s cancellation. “We’re the third-highest scripted show in all of broadcast,” he shared. “We’re winning the night. All the cast wants to come back. And I can tell you this: we aren’t sliding off down a cliff. We’re doing good shows, and still holding our place. So, I don’t know. You tell me”.

The 14th series of Blue Bloods has been plagued with difficulties, resulting from delays in production due to last year’s SAG-AFTRA writers’ strike. It is thought that these delays and difficulties influenced CBS’ decision to bring the show to an end, in addition to growing trends that suggest long-running serial shows are falling out of favour with audiences.

CBS first announced the show’s cancellation in November last year, at which time Selleck released a statement. Within the statement, the actor shared his gratitude for CBS, saying, “Working alongside these incredible actors, writers, producers, directors and crew has been a dream come true and I’m grateful to have been a part of this extraordinary group for over 275 episodes,” before adding, “Thank you to CBS Studios and CBS Network for their steadfast support and we offer heartfelt gratitude to the fans who gathered with us for dinner every Friday night”.

The final series of Blue Bloods is set to come to an end in autumn, with a mid-season break scheduled for May 17th. Viewers are able to watch the conclusion of the police drama on CBS or streaming on Paramount+.
