Tom Misch reveals he stepped back from music industry for his mental health: “The intensity of it all caught up with me”

Tom Misch has discussed his absence from the music industry and revealed it was due to him prioritising his mental health.

Misch released his debut album, Geography, in 2018, which he followed up in 2020 with the Yussef Dayes collaborative record, What Kinda Music, as well as sharing Happy Music under the alias of Supershy in 2023.

However, he hasn’t toured since 2022, which he has now explained in a lengthy social media message to fans.

Misch began his statement by admitting that he’s “not one to post super personal stuff on socials” but felt it was necessary to inform his fanbase about his current situation.

He shared, “You may have noticed I’ve taken a step back over the last few years. This project got bigger than I ever imagined.. throughout my 20s I felt my career growing and growing. Having you all around the world supporting what I do is amazing and I’m very grateful.”

On the flip side of the coin, Misch added, “However a few years ago the intensity of it all caught up with me and came at a cost to my mental health and I stepped back for a while.”

Misch said that his break has been beneficial, noting, “Taking some time away has definitely been needed and very formative for me… exploring who I am outside of this project and trying all sorts of new things… and very importantly spending more time with family and friends.”

Throughout this time, Misch has continued to be involved with music, such as his Wildflower Music Workshops in London, which he says have been “really important” to him.

In an update on new music, Misch added, “All the while tinkering away with my own music at my own pace, behind closed doors and not wanting to shout about it…”

Regarding his 2026 plans, Misch is planning to “be taking things more gently”. However, he did confirm a new album is on the way, revealing, “I’ve finished an album which I’ve made over the last three years.” The multi-instrumentalist described the record as “very vulnerable and personal”.

Additionally, Misch confirmed that “I have a record I started with Marcos Valle in Brazil coming too” and stated new music is also on the way from his electronic alter-ego, Supershy.

He also wants to play live again, but a lengthy tour is not on the cards. Misch shared, “I also hope to do some touring… but the shows will be small and I won’t be doing many of them.”
