Tom Holland calls for Owen Cooper to be the next ‘Spider-Man’
Tom Holland has shared his belief that Adolescence actor Owen Cooper should eventually replace him in Spider-Man.
Holland has now been in the titular role of the franchise since donning the costume for the first time in 2017 in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but knows the baton will need to be passed on one day in the future.
Ahead of the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is set for a global cinematic release on July 31st, Holland gave Cooper his backing to be his successor.
“Owen Cooper would be awesome,” he told Esquire in a new interview, which also saw him officially confirm, after months of speculation, that he married Zendaya in a private ceremony.
When asked why he believes the teenage English actor would make for a suitable choice, Holland said of Cooper, “Obviously he’s super-talented and the talk of the town right now.”
It remains to be seen how long Holland will continue in the Spider-Man series, having previously said to GQ in 2021, “If I’m playing Spider-Man after I’m 30, I’ve done something wrong.”
Holland, who turned 30 earlier this month, recently acknowledged this five-year-old quote, telling GQ, “It’s funny, I saw that quote pop up somewhere recently and I kind of reeled, because I was trying to remember what I meant.”
He elaborated, I think the point of it is that I would love to pass the baton on, and I haven’t achieved that yet. It’s definitely something that we talk about a lot at the studio. So maybe I need to change the quote to 37.”
The Odyssey actor also admitted it may have been a negotiation tool, revealing, “I could also have been trying to leverage Sony and scare them into thinking I wasn’t going to do Spider-Man 4 now that I had a new deal on the horizon. So I don’t know what it could have been. It could’ve been part of a strategy to create fear.”
Whatever the future holds remains to be seen, but one thing for certain is that Holland is set to have a huge summer ahead at the box office with The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
