Tom Cruise to receive honorary Oscar at Governors Awards

Ahead of the Governors Awards in November, Tom Cruise is set to receive the Honorary Award in recognition of his contribution to the world of film.

Cruise, known for his lifelong dedication to cinema, has already been busy this year promoting the latest instalment in the Mission: Impossible franchise, Final Reckoning. The action-packed blockbuster follows Ethan Hunt as he faces what may be his final mission in the series.

The action icon is being honoured by the Academy for his “incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community has inspired us all”.

The award was created to “honour extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences in any discipline, or for outstanding service to the Academy”.

Upon getting his start in the 1980s working on films such as The Outsiders, Cruise has quickly turned himself into one of the most in-demand faces in Hollywood. In addition to playing different dramatic roles in films such as A Few Good Men and Eyes Wide Shut, he has garnered a reputation for his involvement in the Mission Impossible series and his habit of doing all of his own stunts on each film, including doing his own flying in the Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.

While Cruise’s honour is yet to come, he has been given numerous nominations at the Oscars over the years. Aside from Top Gun: Maverick being nominated for ‘Best Picture’ in 2023, he was also nominated for ‘Best Actor’ for Born on the Fourth of July in 1990 and 1997 for his role in Jerry Maguire.

However, Cruise isn’t the only artist being given the prestigious honour that night. Among his fellow honorees include Debbie Allen, known for her production work on films such A Star for Rose and choreographing the Oscars ceremony seven times, as well as production designer Wynn Thomas, best known for working alongside Spike Lee on Do the Right Thing and working on A Beautiful Mind.

Aside from contributions to the film world, country superstar Dolly Parton will also be given the Jean Humanitarian Award for her contribution to Hollywood, including her work with the Dollywood Foundation and her literary program ‘Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library’, which seeks to provide literature to children. The Governors Awards will take place on November 16th, 2025.
