Tim Westwood pleads not guilty to rape and sexual assault charges

Tim Westwood has pleaded not guilty after being charged with rape and sexual assault earlier this year.

The former BBC Radio 1 DJ appeared at Southwark Crown Court on the morning of December 8th, denying the allegations against him.

According to the BBC, Westwood was granted bail ahead of his trial, which will take place in January 2027. He wore black jeans and a burgundy shirt, confirming his name and entering his not guilty pleas.

In October, Westwood was charged with four counts of rape, nine counts of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault. The alleged incidents occurred between 1983 and 2016, involving seven different women.

Westwood was initially released on bail in November. He appeared at Westminster magistrates’ court in a puffer jacket and jeans, surrounded by police and security.

He confirmed his name, date of birth, and address, and did not enter any pleas at the time. When asked if he could hear properly, he replied, “Not really,” but agreed to his bail conditions.

Following his arrest, Chief Crown Prosecutor, Lionel Idan, said, “Our prosecutors have established that there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to trial and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings.”

Idan continued, “The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that criminal proceedings are active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”

Westwood spent almost 20 years at BBC Radio 1 before hosting a show on Capital Xtra.
