Thom Yorke releases new song for Apple TV+ series ‘Smoke’
Radiohead’s Thom Yorke has released a new single, ‘Dialing In’, for Apple TV+’s series Smoke. The new song is used as the opening theme for the series, and can also be heard in the newly dropped trailer.
The single, called ‘Dialling In’, features Thom’s vocals alongside fragile twinkling bells. Throughout the track, a dangerous, deep atmosphere stews, building to a harrowing, full-bodied punch.
It is not an entirely new offering, as the name might suggest. Yorke has previously performed the track live, but this partnership marks the first time it is available on streaming platforms.
The track, originally titled ‘Gawpers’ was further tweaked to underscore and highlight the show’s themes. Inspired by the podcast ‘Firebug’, the series follows an arson investigator who begrudgingly teams up with a police detective. Together, they race to stop two arsonists who ignite a twisted game of secrets.
“Working with Thom Yorke was as much an honour for me as working with Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese or Richard Price,” says Smoke creator and executive producer Dennis Lehane. “I’ve somehow been blessed with collaborating with living legends who were also formative influences on my own creative life. Thom is definitely that. In addition, he took a basic concept I gave him and delivered a song that perfectly embodies the show and absolutely crushes.”
Thom Yorke recently teamed up with Jonathan Zawada, who directed an hour-long film for his latest project, Tall Tales, which was made in collaboration with Mark Pritchard. Far Out gave the project a two star review, writing: “It’s a shame that the movie takes such an artificial and simply ugly approach to crafting visuals, because the existential beauty and despair found in Yorke’s lyrics, paired with the mixture of electronic and ambient soundscapes created by him and Pritchard, deserve much better accompaniment.”
Yorke has also recently adapted William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, which is called Hamlet Hail to the Thief. For the project, Yorke teamed up with Steven Hoggett and Christine Jones, Tony and Olivier Award-winning directors. It features music from Radiohead’s sixth album, Hail to the Thief, which was recorded in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.
