‘This is Spinal Tap 2’ begins filming with major musical cameos confirmed
The highly-anticipated sequel to the hilarious mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap has officially started filming. Aptly named This is Spinal Tap 2 began production recently, 40 years after the original was released in 1984.
The film is shooting in New Orleans. Rob Reiner is hitting up directing duties, while Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer and Michael McKean will all be reprising their iconic roles, stepping back into the shoes of the heavy metal band. Reiner will also be playing the part of the documentarian Martin ‘Marty’ DiBergi.
Several cameos have been confirmed for the movie, as the likes of Questlove and Trisha Yearwood are joining the cast alongside musical legends Garth Brooks, Paul McCartney and Elton John. The latter three were all already confirmed in a podcast interview which aired in November.
Reiner said that he “Recently spoke to Marty DiBergi, who said that he was more than happy to take a sabbatical from his position as a visiting Professor’s Assistant at the Ed Wood School of Cinematic Arts to once again document Spinal Tap to ensure their place in the pantheon of Rock and Roll.”
Full details on the plot are unknown; however, the basic premise is that after a 15-year hiatus, the band has confirmed they will be getting back together for one last concert.
The movie is produced by Reiner, Michele Reiner, and Matthew George, while Castle Rock Entertainment is providing financing. Christopher H. Warner and Derrick Rossi serve as executive producers.
The original This Is Spinal Tap is now viewed as a cult classic that led to the launching of the mockumentary genre. In 2002, the Library of Congress deemed the movie “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Subsequently, it was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry.
