The Weeknd unveils first trailer for movie ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’ starring Barry Keoghan and Jenna Ortega
After releasing his latest record, Hurry Up Tomorrow, on January 31st, 2025, pop superstar The Weeknd has now unveiled the first trailer for the album’s accompanying film, also titled Hurry Up Tomorrow.
The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, had been working on the record as a follow-up in a trilogy with his previous albums After Hours and Dawn FM. The film also features performances from Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan. It is being helmed by Trey Edwards Shults, famous for directing other psychological thrillers such as 2019’s It Comes at Night.
In discussing the new projects, Tesfaye said it was a privilege to work with Ortega in the movie, previously telling Variety last month, “There was a scene where Trey and I looked at each other like, ‘On paper, this is just ridiculous — how is it going to translate on screen?’ And she said, ‘I have an idea.’ She led that whole scene — none of it was rehearsed, and a lot of my reactions in it are not acting.”
Ortega also stated that Tesfaye was extremely kind while shooting and praised him for “looking out for everyone on set.”
While multiple actors had been connected to the project, Tesfaye also said that he couldn’t imagine anyone other than Keoghan in his role, saying, “[He] was a friend of mine prior to all this, and he was always number one on my list for his role. What makes him different from Jenna is that his talent is so raw, it just comes so naturally to him.”
This also marks the second time that The Weeknd has been the lead in one of his projects. Aside from doing various bit parts and playing a secondary role in the Safdie Brothers’ Uncut Gems, he was also behind the making of the HBO series, The Idol, starring Lily-Rose Depp and running for five episodes in 2023.
The movie also comes after Tesfaye announced plans to retire his alias, The Weeknd. While nothing has been made official, he explained that he’d previously plotted to retire the name, saying, “It’s a headspace I’ve gotta get into that I just don’t have any more desire for. I feel like it comes with so much.”
Despite moving on from the musical persona that he has had for more than a decade, Tesfaye says that the execution of both the film and the album mark a “pinnacle moment” in his life. Hurry Up Tomorrow premieres in theatres on May 16th, 2025.
