The sci-fi movie Samuel L Jackson calls “fucking amazing”

The beloved American Hollywood icon Samuel L Jackson isn’t an actor you would instantly associate with the world of science fiction. Yet, if you break down his filmography, you’ll find countless cosmic classics. From his work in George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise that changed the cinematic world of sci-fi to his crucial role as the mastermind Nick Fury in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, Jackson has played a key role in the modern genre.

Arguably, without the weight of the industry stalwart, the Marvel Universe would have never had the culminated the critical and commercial acclaim it received, with Jackson bringing a poise that perfectly captured the superhero series’ joyous spirit. Despite the presence of such stars as Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans leading the line of starring cast members, Jackson’s constant presence has elevated the franchise long past its sell-by date.

Speaking to Collider about his fond experience of playing the character, he told the publication: “I love Nick Fury. Of course. Come on. He’s a guy who has no superpowers, who’s in charge of people who have superpowers, and they let him be…It’s very satisfying to be a part of a world that I admired for so long when I was a kid. I still buy comic books…It means something to be part of a cultural canon that people revere and that they respect”.

As previously mentioned, however, this isn’t the only fantasy sci-fi franchise Jackson has helped to elevate, also having a hand in improving Lucas’ Star Wars as the purple lightsaber-wielding Mace Windu and even in Jurassic Park as the short-lived scientist Arnold.

But, as the actor mentioned, he’s as much a star of such franchises as he is an avid fan, regularly going to the cinema and reading comic books to catch up with his favourite characters and epic tales. Such was made abundantly clear when Jackson appeared in a roundtable interview with the likes of Oscar Isaac, Brian Cox and Tom Hiddleston, among others, for the Hollywood Reporter.

While speaking about his time in the Star Wars franchise, Jackson turned to Isaac, who also appeared in the most recent trilogy in the series and, as a short aside, praised the actor’s other modern classic, Dune. Calling the movie “fucking amazing,” Jackson likely fell in love with the epic sci-fi’s extraordinary vision, which was inspired, in part, by George Lucas’ world of Star Wars.

Director of the first film, Canadian Denis Villeneuve, will soon be releasing the second part in his grand adaptation of Frank Herbert’s book series, with Timothée Chalamet returning alongside the likes of Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Austin Butler.
