The New Pornographers reunite for 'Mass Romantic' anniversary shows

Canadian indie supergroup The New Pornographers are reuniting to celebrate the 21st anniversary of their debut album Mass Romantic.

The festivities to celebrate the album’s 2000 release will include a limited edition LP reissue helmed by Matador Records that will be available on December 10, plus a series of two-night stands across the US and their native Canada, where the band will play both Mass Romantic and their 2005 album Twin Cinema in full.

The tour will feature the lineup of AC Newman, Dan Bejar, Joe Seiders, John Collins, Kathryn Calder, Neko Case, and Todd Fancey, the first time this lineup will have performed live together. Bejar has been famously absent from the band since 2017, and this tour will be the first time keyboardist and filmmaker Blaine Thurier will not be involved. Thurier contributed to both Mass Romantic and Twin Cinema.

“Everyone wants to be successful but, hand to my heart, I had no delusions of success for The New Pornographers,” Newman said in a press release. “To be here over 20 years later, still in the game, is something that I simultaneously take for granted (you just get used to it) and feel eternally grateful for.”

“Been here so long that we can do one of those ‘let’s play that old album all the way through!’ gigs,” Neman continues. “And we are doing just that. 2 nights per city: 1 Mass Romantic, 1 Twin Cinema, plus assorted “hits” from our storied career.

Newman also discussed Bejar’s rejoining of the band and his absence over the last couple of years: “Bejar is coming and God knows if we’ll get him again. When he moved to Spain two months after Mass Romantic came out, I thought he was done in the band and now 21 years later we’ve convinced him to come along for another ride. Just the nature of our band that it’s a special occasion when all the singers show up. Here’s to you showing up as well.”
