The National's Matt Berninger has shared a new single 'Distant Axis'

The National’s own Matt Berninger has shared a brand new solo single ahead of his new record Serpentine Prison, which arrives in October. You can listen to ‘Distant Axis’ below.

The frontman has already shared the album’s first song, the title track, and has now released another stonking single, ‘Distant Axis’. This one comes complete with a video directed by Tom Berninger, the singer’s brother.

The song developed from a demo sent to Berninger from The Walkmen’s Walter Martin. “I met Walter Martin fifteen years ago when The National opened for Walkmen on a tour of shitty clubs in the American southeast,” he commented.

“On that tour, I learned a lot about how to be in a band without ruining your life. I also learned a lot about Florida, Tennessee and Georgia,” remembered Berninger.

“Walt and I have stayed friends, and about three years ago we started passing ideas back and forth. Distant Axis started from a sketch Walt sent me named Savannah. I think it’s about falling out of touch with someone or something you once thought would be there forever.”

The album Serpentine Prison was produced by Booker T. Jones and features Martin and collaborators Matt Barrick, Andrew Bird, Scott Devendorf, Brent Knopf and Ben Lanz.
