‘The Naked Gun’ sequel becomes Liam Neeson’s highest-grossing movie of this decade
Liam Neeson has a hit on his hands. The new Naked Gun sequel has become his highest-grossing movie this decade.
The movie opened on August 1st with a $16.8million debut, marking the franchise’s second-best opening weekend. This marks the best three-day premiere gross for a movie led by Liam Neeson in a decade, trumped only by the 2015 debut of Taken 3.
The Naked Gun has reached a worldwide box office total of $32.9million, comprising a $21.4m domestic gross and $11.5m from international markets. Despite this, the movie has a reported budget of $42m. It still has a long way to go before breaking even.
The new movie has a decent chance of catching up with the 1994 Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult, which made over $51million. However, The Naked Gun is only the 45th highest-grossing movie of the year so far, falling behind the likes of M3GAN 2.0 and Black Bag.
This comes after David Zucker, the director of the original three Naked Gun films, has hit out at the Liam Neeson reboot and has claimed he has “no intention” of seeing the new movie.
The filmmaker, who was behind the original series Police Squad and the three subsequent movies made out of it starring Leslie Neilson, told The Hollywood Reporter that he will not be watching the Akiva Schaffer-directed movie. This is largely because he had previously written a script for a fourth instalment, which was turned down.
Neeson’s latest movies include Ice Road: Vengeance, which was released in 2025. He also starred in 2023’s Retribution and In the Land of Saints and Sinners, also released in 2023. His next upcoming movie is titled 4 Kids Walk into a Bank.
The Naked Gun is in cinemas now.
