The movie Gwyneth Paltrow completely forgot she was in: “I never actually saw it”

To us mere mortals who can only dream of a career in Hollywood, it might seem absurd that an actor, who has been graced with this kind of job, would forget even a single feature film they were in. But for someone like Gwyneth Paltrow, it’s actually pretty easy…especially when you didn’t even realise you were in the film in the first place.

Of the near 50 films she’s been in, you can probably guess which kind of movie an actor like Paltrow is likely to forget. After all, it’s not like anyone is doing Marvel movies for their prestige or accomplishment, unless you count prestige and accomplishment in dollar bills. Surely, at this point, we can all be very frank and agree that entering into the MCU is about one thing and one thing only: money.

This, paired with the fact that there are now nearly as many films in the MCU as Paltrow has appeared in altogether, you can forgive her for forgetting one or two of the seven she’s starred in. Although she didn’t even seem to realise she’d been in that many. Once the money starts rolling in, you probably stop vetting which ones you’re starring in and just start saying yes to whichever is presented to you.

Which is clearly what she did with Spider-Man: Homecoming, as she not only keeps forgetting she was in it, but didn’t even realise she was in it in the first place. “One time I didn’t realize I was in Spider-Man. I was like doing a scene with Robert and Jon Favreau so I thought it was a cameo,” she told Vanity Fair, “And it turned out I was in Spider-Man and I didn’t even realize.”

Paltrow has played Tony Stark/Iron Man’s assistant and love interest since the beginning, from Iron Man right the way up to Avengers: Endgame, with the possibility of returning in the future. She might not play the biggest role, but from being tentative to star in such a big-budget film to becoming a beloved recurring character, Paltrow has truly settled herself into this kind of film. So much so that she doesn’t even ask questions about what Marvel film it is she’s starring in next.

To be fair to her, it’s quite refreshing to have someone be so blatant about their lack of interest in the MCU, instead of an actor who is tripping themselves up trying to pretend that a random cameo is some sort of great honour. Her sheer lack of interest is rather funny.

When asked if she thinks she’ll be in the newest Marvel instalment, Captain America: Brave New World, she simply replied, “What is that?” with a laugh. Same, Gwyneth, same. With Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme on the way, she’s probably not thinking too much about the next random MCU cameo she might have.
