The Mountain Goats frontman John Darnielle announces new thriller

The Mountain Goats‘ captivating frontman, John Darnielle, has announced his third novel. Entitled Devil House, the book will hit stores in January 2022. Darnielle took to Twitter to say: “I’m proud of this book; writing it has been a journey.”

According to the book’s synopsis, the narrative follows a fictional true-crime writer named Gage Chandler. The protagonist is given the opportunity to move into the sinister building that the locals call ‘The Devil House’ because a notorious pair of murders once occurred there.

The synopsis continues: “He begins his research with diligence and enthusiasm, but soon the story leads him into a puzzle he never expected – back into his own work and what it means, back to the very core of what he does and who he is”.

Darnielle’s other two novels earned him widespread acclaim. The first, 2014’s Wolf in White Van, was nominated for a National Book Award for Fiction. His second book, Universal Harvester, was published in 2017 and followed a video store clerk in America’s green heartlands, trying to uncover a mystery.

Darnielle also contributed to the critically acclaimed 33 1/3 series. His entry into the anthology series was centred on Black Sabbath’s classic 1971 album, Master of Reality. The intriguing thing about Darnielle’s entry was that his book didn’t follow the series’ famous essay style. Instead, it followed a fictional young man held in a psychiatric facility during the 1980s.

Darnielle is clearly a busy man. The Mountain Goats released their 20th album, Dark in Here, on June 25th this year. Prior to that, the band released a pair of albums in 2020, Songs for Pierre Chuvin and Getting Into Knives.
