The Lathums raise £4,000 for Wigan Athletic with one-off vinyl sale

Wigan natives, The Lathums, have enjoyed a manic twelve months with a meteoric rise to acclaim. While their creative prowess continues to develop, the band have also been spreading the love with their hometown football club, raising £4,000 for thanks to the sale of a one-off vinyl featuring their cover of Al Wilson’s ‘The Snake’.

Their hometown football club has been in turmoil this year after it appeared a genuine possibility that Wigan Athletic would disappear for good. Even though The Lathums don’t profess to be avid football lovers by any stretch of the imagination, they understood this wasn’t about football — this is about community, pride and people. With no opportunity to put on a live concert in order to raise money for the team, the rising four-piece band needed to get creative in their efforts to raise some much-needed funds for Wigan and decided to cover Al Wilson’s Northern Soul classic but with a twist.

One of the most loved tracks from the era of Northern Soul, Al Wilson song ‘The Snake’ is a number which saw Britain welcome the ballrooms of Wigan as a mecca to which they took pilgrimages to visit during the 1970s. Relying on the past to help propel Wigan Athletic into a brighter future, the band decided to produce a cover of ‘The Snake’. However, there would only be one copy and no digital release. It cost £5.95 for fans to enter the draw to the online raffle and after hundreds of entries, it has been revealed that they raised a staggering £4,052 which has gone straight to Wigan Athletic’s Community Trust.

Frontman Alex Moore has proudly declared: “What we know about football can be written on the back of a postage stamp, but we’ve learned that it means community, shared history, family and hope. The band and I are blown away that over £4,000 can now go towards ensuring fans can believe in a future for the club and the Community Trust gets a little extra help.”

The news has been greeted graciously by Wigan Athletic’s Head of Community, Tom Flower who said: “We would like to place on record our appreciation to The Lathums for the support their initiative will provide Wigan Athletic Community Trust as we continue to provide vital help to people who need it most in Wigan during these challenging times.”
