The house from ‘Home Alone’ is up for sale for an eye-popping fee
The large house that was made famous by the 1990 film Home Alone has gone on the market, and it could be yours for the slightly steep price of $5.25million.
The property is a five-bedroom, six-bathroom home located at 671 Lincoln Avenue, Winnetka, Illinois. It is famous in cinema as the key focal point of Chris Columbus’s festive hit, Home Alone. The film shows 10-year-old Kevin McCallister left home alone over the holiday period and fending off burglars trying to break into his house.
Initially, the Illinois mansion went up for sale in 2012 for a much lower price of $1.58million. In 2021, the owners listed the property on Airbnb, allowing fans of the movie to live out their fantasy and stay for one night only.
Sadly, it’s worth noting that people might not get the full Home Alone experience when staying at the property, given that all exterior shots were filmed on-site. The only interior shots done in the house were those on the main staircase, first-floor landing, basement, and attic.
The famous treehouse in the backyard was built specifically for the film and taken down once it was done shooting. Meanwhile, all other rooms in the property, such as bedrooms and the bathroom, where Kevin films the iconic aftershave scene, were done on set as sound stages.
Additionally, changes have been made to the house since the movie was shot, as the owners added a large conservatory area and a state-of-the-art basketball court. They state on the listing (as per The Guardian) that this is “one of the most famous houses in the world” with two living rooms, a big kitchen, and an “unforgettable staircase.”
Properties being the basis for movies does seem to add value. For instance, last year, the house from Halloween went on sale and sold for $1.8million. Meanwhile, the flat above the bookshop from Notting Hill sold in 2022 for £2.375million.
Any prospective buyers can be assured that all booby traps previously set up by Kevin McCallister have been removed, so if they were to move in, they could do so knowing that they would be safe to wander the property freely. More developments on the ongoing sale of this property will follow.
