The “fucking crazy” scene that nearly broke Ryan Coogler: “I almost lost my mind”

Is there a director in Hollywood making better, more interesting mainstream movies than Ryan Coogler?

Probably not. He’s already knocking on the doors of Paul Thomas Anderson and Christopher Nolan, thanks most recently to the outrageously inventive vampire flick Sinners, which just won two Golden Globes from seven nominations, and there’s much more to come.

If you haven’t seen it, Sinners is a dazzling mixture of genres: action, vampire, thriller, drama, and all topped off with a musical savvy that sees some of the most intense and moving scenes in recent years, plus a dual performance from Michael B Jordan that will go down as a classic.

The pair of Jordan and Coogler have been together from the start; Fruitvale Station, the low-budget 2013 drama about a young Black man shot by police at a rail station in California, brought both of them to Hollywood’s attention, and the duo graduated first to the Rocky spin-off Creed and then the big time, Marvel’s Black Panther in 2018.

That proved to be a galactic hit, with Coogler’s deft direction, the script that he co-wrote and Marvel’s budget combining to pull in over $1.3bn at the box office and earning seven Oscar nominations, winning gongs for four categories.

Jordan and Coogler returned for the sequel in 2022, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which was another hit with audiences and critics alike and marked the duo as major forces in the industry. Two years later, Coogler began work on Sinners, the story of a pair of male twins in 1930s America who return after World War I to start a business, only to face racism and worse in their way.

Filming the movie proved challenging for many reasons, not least the fact that Jordan had to play two very different, if identical, characters, sometimes in the same scene, leading Coogler to nearly lose it completely when faced with some technical issues.

He spoke to the Awardist podcast about one such moment when he had to film Jordan and his stunt double as the twins Smoke and Stack while driving a car, a job that needed a microscopic camera and direction skills to work. Coogler explained: “Every day was different. Every scene was different. Watching the movie, there are certain scenes you wouldn’t think were difficult. You remember the day I almost lost my mind – where you guys had to drive the car and get into the bushes?

Adding, “Pulling off that shot was fucking crazy, because Mike’s driving, and we had to do a repeated pass of the car driving up and landing, them getting out of the car with the correct timing, and then interacting with the bush with the correct timing.”

It paid off in spades, however, Sinners was first a word-of-mouth hit and then a significant commercial one too, with superb supporting performances from actors including Jack O’Connell and Hailee Steinfeld helping it to treble its budget at the box office and have critics predicting Academy Award recognition.

Now, Coogler and Jordan will turn their sights back to the world of Marvel and Wakanda with Black Panther 3 in pre-production. They have also optioned the script of Wrong Answer in order to work as lead and director too, the story of a maths teacher in America who raised his students’ scores in order to try to get increased funding for their school.
