The first trailer for the Robert Mapplethorpe biopic is revealed


The first trailer for the brilliant Robert Mapplethorpe biopic, simply titled Mapplethorpe, sees Matt Smith take the starring role of the infamous and incredible photographer. Matt Smith takes on the role of Robert and seemingly delivers a brilliant performance.

According to the press release the film will look “Mapplethorpe’s life from moments before he and Patti Smith moved into the famed Chelsea hotel, home to a world of bohemian chic,” with Marianne Rendon taking the role of Patti Smith.

Smith’s tender and tempestuous relationship with Mapplethrope was the subject of her 2010 memoir Just Kids which documented their enduring love. The film looks to offer the other side of the tale as well as Mapplethorpe’s life after their relationship.

The gritty and glamorous trailer shows that this could easily buck the trend for the somewhat disappointing biopics to have recently come out and offer a real perspective on an icon gone too soon. The film, directed by Ondi Timoner will come to our film screens on March 1st, 2019.
