‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ smashes predictions in box office debut

Marvel’s latest comic book adaptation, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, has made a massive splash at the box office.

The remake has officially grossed $118million in America and $110million worldwide for a $210m global box office kick-off. This is ahead of expectations which hoped for $100m to $110m in America. It is also just short of the performance from the new Superman movie, which grossed $220m global start.

The movie also had the second-biggest opening at the box office in the US of this calendar year. On July 25th, the film made $57m from combined preview screenings and showings across 4,125 cinemas. This puts it just behind A Minecraft Movie, which made $57.11m. Superman follows closely behind, with $56.1m on its July 11th opening day.

This performance comes as Superman officially became the highest-grossing superhero film of 2025. It surpassed Thunderbolts* at the box office last weekend; Thunderbolts* made $382.1m worldwide at the end of its theatrical run, whereas the new Superman is currently at $472.4m globally. This is split by a $271.7m domestic performance and a $200.7m worldwide.

Elsewhere, it was recently revealed that seasoned actor John Malkovich has been cut entirely from The Fantastic Four movie. The Oscar-nominated performer had been cast as Soviet scientist Ivan Kragoff, better known as Red Ghost. However, director Matt Shakman explained that he had no choice but to make the “heartbreaking” decision for the benefit of the movie.

The new Marvel offering stars Pedro Pascal as Mr Fantastic, The Bear’s Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing, Vanessa Kirby as The Invisible Woman, and Joseph Quinn as The Human Torch.

Meanwhile, Ralph Ineson takes on the villainous role of Galactus and teams up with Garner’s Silver Surfer, whom they must defeat. The Silver Surfer is the herald of a ravenous space god, Galactus, who is out for blood.
