Almost 50 years following the release of the original horror classic, and 16 years after the release of the last film in the series, a new movie in The Exorcist universe has been officially announced by Blumhouse Productions.
Recently confirming the news after years of speculation regarding a potential sequel, producer Jason Blum revealed that the forthcoming release will connect closely with the original film and will be helmed by Halloween director David Gordon Green.
Speaking in a recent interview, Blum stated: “[It’s] going to be like David’s Halloween sequel…I think it’s going to pleasantly surprise all the sceptics out there. We had a lot of sceptics about Halloween and David turned them around, and I think he’s going to turn it around with The Exorcist”.
Remaking, or even adding further narrative detail to William Friedkin’s original 1973 film is seen as a highly contentious act for anyone in the passionate Exorcist fanbase, so Jason Blum and David Gordon Green will have to tread carefully to handle audience expectations. Though it sounds as if Blum is up to the challenge, noting: “I love to do [these] kinds of movies because people are very emotional about it. I think it’s a high bar and it’s a challenge to do the movie”.
Commenting on the potential to bring new fans to the iconic horror series, Blum commented, “Remember, most of the audience coming to this – 95 per cent of the audience who will, if we do our job right, come to see this movie –will not have seen the first Exorcist or even heard of it”.
The producer elaborated: “I want to make a movie for people that know and love the first Exorcist and are furious that we’re doing this, but somehow drag themselves to the theatre.”
With no news as to when we might be able to expect the forthcoming sequel, we highly anticipate its arrival sometime in the next three years or so.
