The Dude’s robe from ‘The Big Lebowski’ is going up for auction

The infamous robe worn by Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski is going up for auction in December. While the item is viewed as the ultimate cinematic depiction of chilling out, it is estimated to be sold for $30,000.

Released in 1998, the Coen brothers film The Big Lebowski is a true cult classic. A crime comedy about mistaken identity, the movie follows Lebowski as he has to deliver a ransom on behalf of a millionaire, also named Jeffrey Lebowski, a man he’s been mistaken for.

Bridges’ performance in the film and the movie’s beloved soundtrack made it become a favourite to many. For many years, it has been worshipped by super fans, and there is now even a Lebowski Fest, which started in Kentucky but has quickly spread worldwide.

A film that has become written into pop culture, it’s been referenced hundreds of times in other films and TV shows. The Dude has become a popular costume every Halloween, but now one buyer can wear the real thing.

The robe is going up for sale along with a whole host of other Hollywood memorabilia from other films. As part of a larger event with Turner Classic Movies, items from Star Wars, Harry Potter and Captain America are also being auctioned off.

As the popularity of the film only seems to grow year on year, interest in the robe is high. According to the Julien’s Action site, it’s expected to sell for somewhere between $30,000 and $50,000, with the opening bid being $7000.

Other items from the film are also going up for sale. The Dude’s sunglasses, a signed and illustrated bowling pin, and the film’s original storyboards are up for grabs.
