The Cure release new single and tracklist for ‘Songs of a Lost World’ album
After spending years outside the studio, The Cure has driven up more anticipation for their album Songs of a Lost World by releasing the official tracklist and their latest single, ‘A Fragile Thing’.
The group teased the song after sharing a fragment of it on social media on October 7th and saying the single would be arriving later in the week. It comes after the first taste of the new album, ‘Alone,’ on September 26th.
In addition to the single release, frontman Robert Smith also went into detail regarding the track’s themes, saying, “‘A Fragile Thing’ is driven by the difficulties we face in choosing between mutually exclusive needs and how we deal with the futile regret that can follow these choices, however sure we are that the right choices have been made… it can often be very hard to be the person that you really need to be.”
While there had been no word about a new Cure album for some time, fans were treated to a guerilla-style marketing campaign. A lucky few were sent postcards with the album title before the band hung a poster outside The Railway Inn, the site of their first concert. Now that the second single is released, the group also shared the tracklisting for the album, culminating in eight songs and concluding with the long-awaited tune, ‘Endsong’.
The new album is shaping up to be the band’s first major release in over a decade, having last put out an album in 2008 with 4:13 Dream. Although the group had been planning on working on a new project, the first rumblings of potential new music began when Smith mentioned working on a new album in 2019 and had talked about his desire for it to be released in 2022, only to have it pushed back to 2024.
However, Smith would later say that he regretted his decision to speak on it, saying, “I mean, if I have one regret is that I said anything at all about it in 2019 because I really shouldn’t have done that. We had only just started creating it.”
He continued: “I don’t know, there are various points where I thought, ‘I think we are going to make a new album,’ and then it’s kind of the idea, sort of like for various reasons, other things have happened, and the idea’s been sort of pushed back.”
In the interim, the frontman contributed to tracks by other artists, including singing the hook on Gorillaz’s ‘Strange Timez’ and on the tune ‘How Not To Drown’ by the synth-pop group Chvrches. Songs from a Lost World is set for release on November 1st, 2024.
