The Cure have almost finished another album

With The Cure set to release their new album, Songs of a Lost World, on November 1st, frontman Robert Smith has now spoken about the prospect another new record in the not-so-distant future.

The Cure’s upcoming LP has already been trailed by the two singles, ‘Alone’ and ‘A Fragile Thing’, which have heightened anticipation for the forthcoming release. Before it was officially announced last month, Smith had discussed the project on many occasions over the last five years before it was delayed by touring and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Therefore, his encouraging comments about another new record by The Cure should be taken with a pinch of salt at this early stage. Nevertheless, it’s a positive sign that Smith is already looking ahead to the future.

Songs of a Lost World marks The Cure’s first record since 2008’s album, 4:13. However, in a new interview with Matt Everitt (via NME), Smith revealed that the band consistently worked through this barren period, explaining, “The oldest song on this album, the demo was done in 2010.”

However, it wasn’t until 2019 that The Cure truly got to work on Songs of a Lost World. Smith shared to the BBC 6 Music presenter: “This is jumping about, but we recorded about 25 or 26 songs in 2019. We recorded three albums in 2019; that’s always been the problem. I’ve tried to get three albums completed. After waiting this long, I was like, ‘Let’s just throw out Cure albums every few months!’ Everything with hindsight, you think, ‘Really? I could have done that a lot better’.”

Elaborating on his plan to release a further two albums following their upcoming LP, Smith said: “It will work out this time. Having finished this one, the second one is virtually finished as well. The third one is a bit more difficult because, well if we get that far… Talking about the third album, you see what I mean? I just can’t help myself.”

As history has taught us, Smith has a tendency to get ahead of himself, and his plans for The Cure are subject to chance. Therefore, in all likelihood, the follow-up album to Songs of a Lost World will not arrive in a “few months” despite being “virtually finished”, but it sounds like another agonising 16-year wait also is off the table.

How The Cure nearly split in 2018

Although Smith is focussed on The Cure, he recently revealed that he had planned for the band to end their career in 2018.

“I thought that the Hyde Park show would be it, I thought that was the end of The Cure. I didn’t plan it, but I had a sneaky feeling that this was going to be it. But it was such a great day and such a great response, I enjoyed it so much and we got a flood of offers to headline every major European festival. ‘Do you want to play Glastonbury?’ So I thought maybe it’s not the right time to stop,” he shared with Uncut.

For at least the next five years, Smith plans to continue with The Cure. However, he did confess to The Times that this may change in 2029 when he turns 70, remarking, “I’m 70 in 2029. And that’s it, that really is it. If I make it that far, that’s it.”
