The Official Charts Company has revealed the best selling records of 2020 in what has proven to be a landmark year for the sales of vinyl.
UK vinyl sales have reached a close to a 30-year high, as sales reach their highest point since the Britpop boom. The end-of-year figures released by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) show that sales have still climbed despite the United Kingdom facing two national coronavirus lockdowns that have shut down independent record shops. 2020 is the 13th consecutive year that vinyl sales have continued to surge in the UK, and it’s now at the highest point since the early 1990s.
The new figures show that almost one in five (18%) of all albums bought in 2020 were vinyl, with a staggering 4.8 million vinyl LPs purchased. These new numbers are 10% up on 2019’s figures, and the BPI has said it has been helped by LoveRecordStores, Tim’s Twitter Online Listening Parties, Record Store Day, The Record Club and National Album Day.
Geoff Taylor, chief executive of BPI, has commented: “In a year when all our lives have changed, music’s power to inspire has never been more evident. The immediacy and convenience of streaming make it the go-to audio format for most of our listening, but more and more fans choose to get closer to their favourite artists and albums on vinyl.
“It’s remarkable that LP and audio tape sales should have risen at all given the challenges we’ve all faced. The surge in sales despite retail closures demonstrates the timeless appeal of collectable physical formats alongside the seamless connectivity of streaming.”
Among the best selling records, the classics continue to feature as Fleetwood Mac’s iconic album Rumours takes top spot. In fact, albums by Oasis, Amy Winehouse, Nirvana, Queen and AC/DC all make up the top 10. With that in mind, however, vinyl fans did explore new music with Arctic Monkeys, IDLES and Harry Styles all selling well.
The same patten was also followed in the singles market as the likes of Joy Division, the Rolling Stones, The Specials, The Damned and more all featured in the top 40. That said, it was the singles sales that new music enjoyed some success with a number of rising bands all featuring.
