Taika Waititi reveals the “Taika-verse” theory: “I’m really awesome”

Screenwriter and filmmaker Taika Waititi has recently talked himself up in an interview and explained why he casts himself in all his movies. The New Zealander also opened up on the self-named “Taika-verse” found in his films.

“In all honesty, and this is gonna sound very arrogant, but I really think I’m real awesome,” the director recently told Consequence. “I like watching myself in the edit. I know a lot of people [who say], ‘Oh, I hate watching myself,’ but I actually really get a kick out of it”.

He continued: “I’m like, ‘Ah man, this guy’s so funny.’ That’s just probably a lot about me, you know? I’m probably my own biggest fan.”

Waititi became an actor at the age of six and decided to turn to filmmaking when he grew tired of the roles he was being offered auditions before. He figured if he were making the films, then he could put himself in any role he wanted.

“Really, when you think about it, it actually took even longer than if I just kept auditioning,” he admitted. “I went the really long roundabout way of becoming an actor.”

The “Taika-verse timeline” is comprised of the Hunt for the Wilderpeople Cinematic Universe (HFTWCU), and Waititi’s next film, Next Goal Wins, sees him once again play a priest character, having previously done so in Wilderpeople.
