Taika Waititi hints at the end of ‘Our Flag Means Death’
Good things can’t last forever, and Taika Waititi has suggested that season two of Our Flag Means Death will be the show’s final outing.
The American comedy about the misadventure of pirates, starring Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby, first aired back in March 2022. Receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews thanks to its LGBTQ+ representation and dark humour, the HBO show went on to a second series in October 2023.
But that second series is expected to be its last, according to Waititi. Speaking to Consequence, the actor and director said he felt that the comedy had reached a “natural end” for the two main characters, Ed and Stede.
“Just because I feel like, you know, they’ve been through so much and then wind up in that nice place at a happy ending,” he commented.
Playing the role of Ed Teach, or Blackbeard, Waititi has nothing but praise for the show, describing Our Flag Means Death as “a really special show”.
“I love the show so much, and maybe it can survive without Rhys and I,” he continued, “Maybe, I don’t know. I do think the character of Blackbeard is something I’m really proud of.”
It’s important for the actor that the show doesn’t run on too long, dragging the characters through unnecessary, extra stress: “I don’t want it to feel like Rambo III suddenly, you know, when you’re like, ‘Oh man, they have to leave their idyllic life again,” he said.
Cautious to not extend the series into a franchise that runs past its purpose, this is clearly a common streak in Waititi’s work ethic as it’s announced that he also won’t be involved in a potential fifth Thor film.
Taika Waititi’s new self-written film, Next Goal Wins, starring Michael Fassbender, comes out in late December 2023.
