Taika Waititi reveals he’s “fatigued” from making blockbuster movies
Director Taika Waititi has explained why he needs to take a break from making blockbuster movies, the likes of which he’s become known for making over the last decade.
Marvel has recently experienced a loss with their latest film, The Marvels, which has raised the question of whether audiences are growing tired of superhero movies, a topic which Waititi weighed in on at the Los Angeles premiere of Next Goal Wins.
He told The Hollywood Reporter, “I don’t know. I’m a bit fatigued by working on those big films, studio films, which is why I’ve come back to do smaller films like this; my next film will be a smaller one.”
Still, the New Zealander admitted that there will “always be a place for them, and they’re always inspirational”. He added: “As a little kid, those are the things I loved, going to see these big movies set in outer space to take a great escape from where we are. So I hope they continue.”
Next Goal Wins looks to be a departure from Waititi’s superhero content. The movie tells the true story of the awful American Samoa football team and the attempt to reverse their fortunes by employing a new coach played by Michael Fassbender.
Discussing the new film, Waititi noted, “All of my films are underdog stories, really. Listen, no one wants to go see a film about winners who keep winning; that’s boring. You’ve got to start somewhere and go somewhere, so it’s about change.”
