The album Michael Stipe wants REM to be remembered for: “A fearful force”
At the top of their game.

Michael Stipe is an American musician, singer, songwriter, producer and visual artist best known as the lead vocalist and lyricist of the alternative rock band REM.
As the band’s frontman from its formation in 1980 until its amicable split in 2011, Stipe became one of alternative music’s most distinctive voices through his introspective lyrics, enigmatic stage presence and expressive vocal style. Alongside guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry, he helped transform REM from college radio favourites into one of the world’s most influential rock bands with albums such as ‘Automatic for the People’, ‘Out of Time’ and ‘Murmur’. Since REM disbanded, Stipe has focused on solo music, photography, film production and visual art while remaining an influential cultural figure.
