Jerry Cantrell is an American musician, singer, songwriter and guitarist best known as the founder, lead guitarist and principal songwriter of Alice in Chains.
Widely regarded as one of the defining guitarists of the grunge movement, Cantrell helped shape the band’s distinctive sound through his heavy, melodic riffs, intricate harmonised guitar work and emotionally introspective songwriting. Alongside vocalist Layne Staley, he wrote and recorded landmark albums including Facelift, Dirt, Jar of Flies and Alice in Chains, before continuing with the band following its reunion in 2005.
Cantrell has also enjoyed a successful solo career with albums such as Boggy Depot, Degradation Trip, Brighten and I Want Blood. His influence extends far beyond grunge, inspiring generations of rock and metal guitarists.
