Summary
After the death of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the loyal Roman general Maximus is betrayed by the emperor's power-hungry son, Commodus, who murders his father and seizes the throne. Stripped of his rank and family, Maximus is sold into slavery and trained as a gladiator. Rising through the brutal arenas of the Roman Empire, he returns to Rome determined to confront Commodus and restore honour to the empire while inspiring the people with his courage and resilience.
