‘Gladiator’ is a 2000 historical epic directed by Ridley Scott and written by David Franzoni, John Logan and William Nicholson.
Set during the Roman Empire, the film stars Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a respected Roman general who is betrayed after the murder of Emperor Marcus Aurelius and forced into slavery before rising as a gladiator seeking revenge against the new emperor, Commodus.
Combining spectacular action, political intrigue and emotional drama, ‘Gladiator’ revitalised the historical epic for a new generation and became one of the defining films of the 21st century. The film received widespread critical acclaim, winning five Academy Awards, including ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Actor’ for Crowe.
