Sylvester Stallone pays tribute to ‘Rocky’ co-star Carl Weathers
Sylvester Stallone is among the latest to join the tributes that have been pouring in for American icon Carl Weathers following his tragic demise.
A major part of the indescribable magic of Rocky can be attributed to the unique dynamic between Stallone’s titular character and Weathers. He is brilliant as Apollo Creed, the supremely talented heavyweight boxing champion who emerges as a rival and a friend.
In a video posted to Instagram, Stallone delivered a touching tribute. He began: “Today is an incredibly sad day for me. I’m so torn up, I can’t even tell you.”
The actor added: “I’m just trying to hold it in because Carl Weathers was such an integral part of my life, my success — everything about it, I give him incredible credit and kudos. Because when he walked into that room, and I saw him for the first time, I saw greatness. But I didn’t realise how great. I never could’ve accomplished what we did with Rocky without him.”
While talking about Weathers’ skills, he continued: “He was absolutely brilliant — his voice, his size, his presence, his athletic ability, but, most importantly, his heart, his soul. It’s a horrible loss. He was magic. I was so fortunate to be part of his life. Apollo, keep punching.”
Weathers passed away on February 1st, 2024, due to natural causes. According to his family statement, he died peacefully in his sleep.
