Sydney Sweeney reveals intense training regime to play boxer Christy Martin in new biopic

Sydney Sweeney has detailed her training regime and explained how she gained 30 pounds to play boxer Christy Martin in a new biopic.

The movie was shot late last year and is expected to be released before the end of 2025. David Micho directed the biopic, which has yet to be given an official title. It will chart Martin’s career to the top of the female boxing profession in the 1990s.

In a new interview with W Magazine, Sweeney explained how she changed her physique in order to play Martin on the big screen: “I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training.”

She continued: “I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.”

The publication then noted that Sweeney gained 30 pounds for the biopic. The actor detailed the physical changes her body went through as she prepared for the role, sharing, “My body was completely different. I didn’t fit in any of my clothes. I’m usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, Oh my god.”

After undergoing the transformation, Sweeney said that she felt “amazing” and described herself as “crazy strong.”

Martin’s life has previously been the subject of a Netflix documentary, and her achievements in the ring only tell part of her story. She survived an abusive marriage, and her husband was later convicted of attempted murder after trying to kill her in 2010, as well as suffering from substance abuse issues during the marriage.

In addition to portraying Martin, Sweeney has an array of other new projects in the pipeline, including Echo Valley, The Housemaid and the third season of Euphoria. However, due to scheduling conflicts, she was recently replaced in A24’s Masque of the Red Death by Mikey Madison.
