Suspected Banksy appears on boarded-up toilet in London
A suspected new work by Banksy has suddenly appeared on the side of a boarded-up public toilet in London.
The piece, depicting Banksy’s signature print of a girl holding balloons, was emblazoned using white and gold paint – but also took a twist given its location, as the balloons are shaped like toilet seats.
Residents in Clerkenwell Green in Farringdon first spotted it on April 3rd. A local business owner whose premises overlook the public toilet said a man had appeared earlier in the week claiming he was painting on the scaffolding.
He told the Daily Mail: “He came in about quarter to seven Monday or Tuesday. He said he’d been doing a bit of decorating but then that [the graffiti] came after.”
A notice has now been displayed next to the unlikely canvas which forbids people from removing or tampering with the artwork, heightening suspicion further that this is indeed a Banksy emblem.
This newest piece follows a series last year for the elusive artist in which he painted a number of black silhouetted animal pictures around areas in London. However, he has now seemingly returned to his signature artistic muse.
However, this month also marks a rare moment when Banksy’s identity could potentially be revealed, as he is set to enter into a legal case over copyright with a greeting card company that uses his images.
The tribunal, being held in April by the UK Intellectual Property Office, will see Banksy’s legal representatives speak publicly for one of the first ever times, perhaps giving a greater glimpse into the artist than ever before.
