“Show me the money!”: the story behind Tom Cruise’s most famous line

When it comes to an actor operating at the level of Tom Cruise, it’s almost impossible to single out instances from a career full of iconic outings. Having worked with filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg and Paul Thomas Anderson, Cruise has built a body of work that is completely stacked with both critical and commercial hits. While fans obviously have their own preferences regarding Cruise’s best on-screen moments, there’s one that almost always makes it onto the list.

For many, Cruise’s most famous line came during his memorable performance in Cameron Crowe’s acclaimed 1996 sports drama Jerry Maguire. Based on the relationship between agent Leigh Steinberg and footballer Tim McDonald, the movie delves into the immense financial world that is responsible for the scale and production of major league sports.

While Cruise’s work throughout the film is impressive, one special moment occurs when he has an interaction with Cuba Gooding Jr on the phone. It involves repeated incantations of the phrase “show me the money!” which has now become almost synonymous with Jerry Maguire’s vast legacy within the framework of popular culture. According to Crowe, the phrase repeatedly entered his consciousness throughout the production, even involving the musician Glenn Frey.

Crowe told Deadline: “Another thing about Glenn is his nose for the hook. I said, you should do some music for us. I mentioned this acoustic song he wrote that I knew he had never recorded. He said, ‘No, no, no, no, no. I got a better idea for you.’ A couple days later, he called me into his trailer, and he played me this eight-minute funk track called ‘Show Me the Money’, and that was the first time where I felt like, wow, people are really responding to this phrase, show me the money, and Glenn went right for it.”

The filmmaker added: “Every page has something that survived many battles, and every once in a while, something just lights on fire. Cuba and Tom duelling with ‘Show me the money!’, that happened in a rehearsal. I was so giddy. I ran across the lot with the tape of it and played it for Jim’s assistant, Maria, and said am I crazy, or is this the best f**king scene with Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding ever? And she’s like, ‘Holy shit, they’re screaming at each other.’ I’m like, yeah, and I don’t want to do it ever again until we have cameras and people there because this is awesome. It exploded in rehearsal…”

While there has been a lot of discussion about the scene, the filmmaker once revealed the origin of the iconic phrase. Crowe stated that Tim McDonald was actually responsible for coining the expression, further reinforcing the link between the reality of the events that occurred and the dramatised cinematic representation of the story.
