Steven Spielberg reveals his thoughts on ‘Dune: Part Two’

Following the success of Dune: Part Two, director Denis Villeneuve sat down with fellow filmmaker Steven Spielberg to discuss the film in a special Q&A at the DGA in Los Angeles.

Dune: Part Two sees Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides learning the Fremen ways and falling in love with Zendaya’s Chani. Before getting into various experiences Villeneuve encountered while filming the second instalment, Spielberg described the Q&A as a great “honour”, adding that some filmmakers are “the builders of worlds”. Among these, Spielberg explains, many familiar names hold such a title.

After revealing his “list” to include names like Georges Méliès, Walt Disney, Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas, George Pal, Ray Harryhausen, Federico Fellini, Tim Burton, Wes Anderson, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott, and Guillermo del Toro, Spielberg adds that he “deeply, firmly” believes in Villeneuve’s place among the heroes.

“You are one of its newest members,” he adds, adorning the director with possibly one of the biggest endorsements you could receive in the business. To this, Villeneuve responds with gratitude at being considered among the “founding fathers of science fiction.”

To conclude the panel, Spielberg thanks Villeneuve and expresses his opinions on Dune: Part Two, explaining that the film is one of the “most brilliant science fiction films I’ve ever seen.”

After hitting cinemas on March 1st, Part Two has enjoyed immense success, with many fans and critics even claiming it to be better than the first instalment. Regarding a third movie, Villeneuve recently said that while it is entirely possible, he would only make it on the condition that its quality exceeded that of the second movie.

The director said, “If we go back, it needs to be real,” before adding, “it needs to be relevant if ever I do Dune Messiah, because it’s going to be better than Part Two. Otherwise, I won’t do it.”

Given the enjoyment and praise the cast and crew have received for creating an impressive spectacle and delivering world-class performances, it is easy to imagine the announcement of a planned third addition to the film series. The film has already amassed over $500million at the box office, with many having described Villeneuve as the one to watch, citing his unmatched ability to repurpose the Hollywood blockbuster for a modern audience.

Far Out said in a four-and-a-half-star review of Dune: Part Two: “Dune simply has to be seen on the big screen to be truly experienced; any lesser viewing negates its Lawrence of Arabia-indebted cinematography, captivating action sequences and a score of a stultifying, almost deafening quality.”
