Sports Team cancel European shows due to financial strain
British six-piece Sports Team have announced the cancellation of several European shows due to the huge financial risk of going on tour.
They announced the news on social media, in a statement that began earnestly, “We’ve had to cancel some of our European dates. Cancelling shows goes against everything we want to do. We’re in a band because we love playing live.”
The statement then shared a humorous story that revealed their commitment to touring: “We once drove 24 hours through the night from London to get to a show in Munich. There were 12 people there ,and the next day we drove back to Birmingham for the next show. Nobody slept. Most of us cried. It was hell. I would do it again tomorrow.”
They continued, “We’ve done plenty of tours which haven’t made money. Touring as a six piece band is an extremely stupid business model. Normally we’d be able to make things work. This time round we couldn’t justify the financial risk.”
The band revealed that they would still be playing Here’s The Thing Festival, and dates in Madrid, Paris, and Antwerp, but they have cancelled shows in Cologne, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Berlin, Munich, Zurich, Annecy, Barcelona, and Milan.
They apologised to all the fans impacted, adding, “There were a lot of places we hadn’t had the chance to play before, and somewhere we had made very good friends in the past, all of which we will be working to reschedule as soon as possible.”
The band signed off on a positive note, announcing that they are back in the studio and have been working on new music that sounds “like Wonderwall played by God. You will be hearing it soon.”
They finally promised that all UK dates will go ahead this November, and more Sports Team news will come within the month. November will see the ‘Here’s The Thing’ singers play Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham, Leeds, Brighton, Norwich, Portsmouth, and finally London’s Electric Brixton venue.
