‘South Park’ creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone confirm new project with Kendrick Lamar
With their South Park commitments continuing to occupy the majority of their time, it was beginning to look as though creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone may never return to the arena of feature filmmaking again, especially in a live-action capacity.
After all, it’s been 20 years since the duo were last credited as either writers, directors, or producers on a theatrical release. Notably, their last movie, Team America: World Police, was realised entirely by puppets to lampoon the action genre and the self-serving nature of celebrities.
Their previous movie before that was 1999’s South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, which means the last time Parker and Stone lent their creative talents to a live-action feature was all the way back in 1997’s superhero sendup Orgazmo.
Having signed a $900million deal to continue crafting new seasons and hourlong specials of South Park through to at least 2027, the long-running animated favourite has been taking up the overwhelming majority of their time for decades. However, at long last, they’ve got a new movie in the works, and Kendrick Lamar is along for the ride.
There’s no hint of a title as of yet, but things must be ticking along nicely behind the scenes after the studio announced the project will hit screens on July 4th, 2025. Parker and Stone haven’t been named as writers, either, but they will direct and produce through their Park County banner, with Lamar also on board in a producer capacity alongside PGLang partner Dave Free.
Paramount film chief Brian Robbins told the crowd at CinemaCon: “This script is one of the funniest and most original scripts we’ve ever read”. Furthermore, a prime release date right in the thick of the summer season indicates there’s belief the untitled movie has the potential to become a major box office hit.
When the project was first hinted at back in January 2022, South Park veteran Vernon Chatman was named as the screenwriter behind a comedy that follows “a young Black man who is interning as a slave re-enactor at a living history museum,” who finds himself plunged into a personal crisis when he “discovers his white girlfriend’s ancestors once owned his.”
From the information detailed, the movie sounds as if it’s got the potential to stir up controversy, which is expected considering the involvement of Parker and Stone heavily involved.
