Sophie Turner confirmed as new Lara Croft in ‘Tomb Raider’
Prime Video has confirmed that Sophie Turner will be joining the latest Tomb Raider series as adventurer Lara Croft.
Headed by creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Turner takes over for the last two actors, Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, who took on the role in 2001 and 2018, respectively. Turner was said to have been in the running to play the action star for years, with other potential choices including Mackenzie Davis, Emma Mackey and Lucy Boynton.
When talking about the casting, Waller-Bridge expressed her enthusiasm for the project, saying, “I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team.” Alongside Waller-Bridge, Chad Hodge has also been added to the production team as a co-show runner, having worked on Good Behaviour and Single All the Way.
Waller-Bridge also talked about the entire crew’s excitement for working with the iconic video game character, saying, “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artefacts out — Croft is coming.”
Turner has also said that she is “thrilled beyond measure” to play Croft and promises to give everything she can to do her justice.
While she has noted the “massive shoes” that she has to fill living up to the previous iterations, Turner says she is up to the challenge, saying, “with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”
The show’s development started back in 2023, when Waller-Bridge first pitched the idea of bringing Croft back to the screen again. After pitching the initial idea, Prime Video picked it up and placed a series order for it in May 2024.
This also comes after the recent reimagining of Tomb Raider in animated form on Netflix. The series ran for nine episodes and featured Hayley Atwell voicing the adventurer alongside Earl Baylon and Allen Maldondo.
Along with Hodge and Waller-Bridge, Jonathan Van Tulleken will also be serving as an executive producer on the series, having contributed to series such as Shogun and Dope Thief. Though details of the series remain scarce at this point, production is set to begin on January 19th, 2026.
