‘Sophie’: Final posthumous Sophie album announced
After her tragic passing in 2021, electronic music fans are getting one last taste of pioneering producer Sophie‘s final posthumous work via her upcoming self-titled album.
This comes after a video was uploaded to the late producer’s YouTube channel, featuring cryptic footage that alluded to a potential new project. Now that the album has been announced, a new single, ‘Reason Why,’ featuring BC Kingdom and Kim Petras, has been released.
Throughout the 2010s, Sophie had been known as one of the leading figures in electronic dance music. Outside of her own ventures, she has been known for working with some of the icons of pop music, including Charli XCX, and Nicki Minaj, and also working with pop icon Madonna with her comeback single, ‘Bitch I’m Madonna’.
Despite being one of the leading names in electronic music, Sophie only had one album to her name before her passing in 2021. Though her debut compilation, Product, was released in 2015, her only full-length effort, Oil of Every Pearl’s Uninsides, was released in 2018, with a remix album coming out the next year.
While the record would earn Sophie a Grammy nomination for ‘Best Dance/Electronic Album’ at the 2019 Grammys, it would be her only release after passing away from a tragic fall in 2021. Since then, most of her music has gone unreleased.
Outside of occasional production jobs working with Hyd and Basside, along with a collaboration with Jlin on the song ‘Jsloipnhie’, none of Sophie’s unreleased material had seen the light of day. Along with being released through Transgressive and Future Classic, it is also set to be the producer’s final official release.
This goes along with what the producer’s frequent collaborator Ben Long had said following her death, telling Billboard, “I don’t want to be like, ‘We’re going to put everything out,’ because sometimes Sophie didn’t want it to or it wasn’t finished. But it was quite clear with a lot of songs, just from the fact that we had been working on them and mixing the album, that I know the direction a lot of things were supposed to be going.”
Of course, that’s not to say that Sophie’s influence hasn’t still been felt throughout the pop sphere. On her most recent album brat, Charlie XCX wrote various tribute songs to the late producer, including the tune ‘So I’ and ‘Vroom Vroom’ about her experiences. Sophie is set to be released on September 27th, 2024.
