You want a new single? How about a new music video? How about all of that and a release date for the parent album? We have got it all for you when it comes to Sons of Raphael, the west London experimental brother-duo.
Full-Throated Messianic Homage is the title of the band’s upcoming debut album, due out on May 21st. The band’s first full-length album comes after their 2018 EP A Nation of Bloodsuckers, which would have easily won the best-named releases of the year contest had The Wombats not swooped in with Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life.
Musically, Sons of Raphael sound nothing like The Wombats: the brothers Raphael, Lorel and Ronnel, are more into combining dream-pop vocals with Suicide-like drum machines and indie-rock guitars.
Their new single, ‘Revelation’, is a lot more explicitly gothic and heady than previous songs like ‘Rio’ and ‘Jesus’, both featured on the Bloodsuckers EP and the latter of which sound like Oasis being broadcast from the depths of Hell. Starting off like a classic Hammer Films score, the ominous tension is broken with the familiar thump of a drums and eventually climaxes in a somewhat surprisingly catchy chorus, considering how the rest of the song tends to shun melody over atmosphere.
“The wild horse of revolution is called for as we try to liberate ourselves from a future morally-oppressive society ‘where killers and messiahs are identical twins’,” state the band. “As it is written in The Book of Proverbs: ‘A friend loves at all times but a brother is born to help when trouble comes’; this is the nerve centre of our new music video for ‘Revolution’. It captures ‘how good and how pleasant it is when brothers dwell together in unity’.”
Hey, if you guys say so! If you’re not in the right mindset, it may sound pretentious and ridiculous, but if you’re buying in, these guys have shades of brilliance in their dramatic string patches and eerie key changes.
