Songs to walk home from the club to: Lime Garden’s 2am playlist

I’d say imagine the scene, but you probably already know it well. The night is over, your feet are beginning to ache through the numbing buzz of the booze, the mood is flagging, eyes are feeling heavy. The dance floor is starting to quieten or, perhaps, they’ve starkly slammed the lights on as a clear sign – it’s time to leave.

Outside, the night is cold, but you’re still drunk enough not to really feel it or not really care. You’re drunk enough to feel invincible for a moment, so rather than calling an Uber, you set off walking, maybe, or decide the bus is the way to go. Then, right after the goodbyes, it hits. That mood.

You probably already know it well. It’s not so much sadness as a good night can hold off the true dark clouds. But there’s something about the early morning you exit a club into that seems about to push anyone into a deep, reflective mood. It’s here when you’ll start to reminisce on old loves, lost friendships, that joke that didn’t land three years ago, the plan you never followed through on, the dream you had a kid that you didn’t commit to, the trips you still want to go on, the money you don’t have to fund it, the dream home you’re not sure you’ll ever afford, and so on, and so on, and so on.

There is nothing like the journey home from a night out to get you introspecting, or even spiralling. Even if it’s been the best night of your life, the afterglow of a high always gets you a little blue.

“I turn to your face, it’s funny how time works that way,” Lime Garden sing in the bridge of their new track ‘Maybe Not Tonight’, capturing that exact moment when the mood turns. As the thumping beat of their new club track breaks into something more internalised, they translate that feeling, singing, “I run for the hills, the only place I can seek thrills / The only time I can stand still,” before concluding to keep the night going – “I’m not gonna stop yet.”

“Sometimes you go out and can have the best night ever, but that walk home afterwards still sends you,” the band told Far Out, talking about the familiar inspiration behind the track. But, there’s something intoxicating in itself about the slight crash that comes at the end of it all, adding, “I guess I like the self-indulgent ritual of feeling a bit sorry for yourself when you’re trying to catch the bus home after a night out.”

And so, the band have offered up a companion to the feeling. “As our single Maybe Not Tonight has just been released, it feels fitting to have a playlist about (after) the night out – the 2am walk home,” adding, “These songs are for dramatically looking out of the window while contemplating everything you have ever done.”

Every emotion is covered. LCD Soundsystem’s ‘All My Friends’ is more euphoric in its nostalgia, while tracks from Car Seat Headrest and Cameron Winter go all in on angst.

If the night brought romantic chaos, whether it be a run-in with an ex or the start of something new, Lime Garden recommend hitting play on The Knife’s ‘Heartbeats’, or maybe Sorry’s ‘Ode To Boy’.

From glitching electronic moments to pure indie power that will have you walking home feeling like a god, they’ve captured every point on the spectrum. One thing is for certain: there’s no escaping the deep thoughts that wait at the edge of the night.

Save it for next weekend, hit play at 2am, Sunday morning.
