“People could have a laugh”: the one song Rebel Wilson couldn’t live without

Rebel Wilson revealed quite a few things during her episode of Desert Island Disks. Firstly, she became an actor after hallucinating due to malaria, and secondly, she moved to Hollywood with nothing but a duvet and a suitcase. While none of this may come as a surprise given the types of roles she has become known for, there’s an interesting story in the songs that have accompanied her along the way.

Unlike the many humourous characters Wilson has played throughout her career, many of her song choices were incredibly heartfelt, which shows how much music has become a worthy companion throughout many of the actor’s favourite memories and major milestones. Although she has suffered the brutality of media discourse, she keeps her head high and appreciates only what matters.

After she was forced to come out by a publication that threatened to publicise her relationship with her partner, Wilson soon began to share an array of wholesome details about the partnership and how they got engaged. One of her song choices is her favourite of all time, not only because of its indisputable brilliance but because it reminds her of the time she got down on one knee.

As she asked the all-important question, the unforgettable moment was soundtracked by a violinist’s reimagination of Elton John’s ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight?’—in perfect keeping with the social media caption she posted following the announcement of their togetherness. “I thought I was searching for a Disney Prince… but maybe what I really needed all this time was a Disney Princess,” she wrote.

For most of us, the mere sound of Whitney Houston’s voice evokes similar romantic spine-tingling sentiments, and Wilson is no different. ‘Greatest Love of All’ became a natural favourite and ingrained in her from an early age due to her mother playing a cassette tape of the song and singing along. According to Wilson, her mother loved the sentiment behind viewing children as leading the way into a better world.

In true Wilson fashion, however, when urged to pick her favourite song among those she enjoys, none of the above sit atop her list, but not for the reasons you might think. Wilson is attached to every one of her choices, but if she were forced to pick one that would play on the desert island the moment she gets discovered, she would rather appropriately opt for ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’.

“They mean everything to me,” the actor said, discussing the various tracks she selected. “[But] I would maybe choose ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’ because if they find me, and I’m like a skeleton, at least people could have a laugh when they listen to that song.” Although the outcome likely wouldn’t have been any different, all other choices may hold too much depth in Wilson’s life to ever be picked out and placed above all other contenders.
