Slowdive and Flaming Lips members form new band Beachy Head

Members from Slowdive and Flaming Lips have pulled together to form a brand new group, Beachy Head.

The new and exciting group features Rachel Goswell and Christian Savill from Slowdive, alongside Flaming Lips drummer Matt Duckworth, Ryan Graveface from Casket Girls and Dreamend, and The Soft Cavalry’s Steve Clarke. The group’s eponymous debut album will be released on April 30th through Graveface’s record label under his surname.

The group’s name is taken from a chalk cliff called Beachy Head in Sussex, which, despite being one of Britain’s most popular beauty spots, also has a traumatic back story.

Beachy Head explain more in their liner notes on Bandcamp and reveal that they have been slowly building towards creating the album for some time. Savill first started writing songs that appear on the project in 2019, but he had no time back then that’s where the tracks would end up.

Savill then revealed that he reached out to others to form the project after finding the songs “felt different in that they’re more personal and honest”.

The statement continues, “Ryan and Christian put flesh on the bones in Savannah [Georgia] just before Covid struck. Matt Duckworth added drums. In between lockdowns back in the UK, Steve added harmonies and other instrumentation. The final touch of recording was Rachel Goswell contributing vocals on a few songs.”
