Simon Pegg gives verdict on axed Quentin Tarantino ‘Star Trek’ movie: “Batshit crazy”
Simon Pegg has shed some light on what the axed version of the Star Trek movie directed by Quentin Tarantino would have looked like, branding it “batshit crazy”.
The actor, who starred as the character Scotty in the most recent version of the franchise, was speaking at a Fan Expo event in Boston over the weekend when he was asked about the Tarantino-fronted project, which was ultimately canned in 2023.
“That was what we call in the business batshit crazy,” Pegg jokingly admitted, per Collider, before adding: “It was everything you would expect a Quentin Tarantino Star Trek script to be.”
The prolific director had been attached to put his own spin on the famous space franchise for some time, having already delivered a successful pitch to Paramount on his idea for it. However, the film ended up falling by the wayside after Tarantino allegedly became concerned that Star Trek would transpire to be his final directorial effort, due to his self-imposed ten-movie limit.
Despite this, Pegg said he would have enjoyed seeing Tarantino’s view of the Star Trek world, even though it may not have gone down so well with diehard fans of the franchise.
“I think it would have been such an incredible sort of curio to see Star Trek through his lens,” the Shaun of the Dead star considered, before conceding, “I don’t know how it would have gone over with the fans, but it certainly would have been an interesting thing.”
Allegedly, Tarantino’s spin on the series would have been based on an original 1960s episode, ‘A Piece of the Action’, which is mostly set on Earth in a landscape akin to 1930s gang culture.
Meanwhile, the Star Trek dynasty is set to continue with the new series of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which will premiere on Paramount+ in early 2026.
